What is Naturopathy?

What is NaturopathyNaturopathy is a form of alternative medicine based on the idea that the body has an innate capacity to fight disease and heal itself.  Naturopaths improve health and eliminate illness by addressing the person holistically, supporting a person’s own internal body, mind, and spirit resources.  Naturopathy comprises a blend of different therapies, all attempting to restore the body to health in the most natural, noninvasive way possible by stimulating the body’s own healing powers.  Naturopathic treatments can include manual therapy, oxygen therapy, herbs, and environmental medicine, as well as other modes of alternative medicine such as aromatherapy and homeopathy.  A consultation usually includes analysis of your medical history, lifestyle, diet, exercise habits, stress, relationships, sleep patterns, and mental and spiritual health.

Naturopaths believe that the physical symptoms of disease are caused by an underlying problem in the mind, spirit, or body.  The goal is not to only remove symptoms.  Rather, the goal is to discover root causes and address them, supporting the body to self-healing, and the symptoms will naturally disappear when the causative factors have been removed.

The Naturopath’s goal is to educate the person about the causative factors, and guide them toward changes that support the body’s ability to heal itself.  Ultimately, the person learns to take responsibility for their own health, with the naturopath acting as a resource and tutor toward that goal.
